FRESNO, Calif. — To set the tone for the new year, Fresno Pacific men's basketball defeated Hawaii Pacific 84-72 at the Special Events Center. The Sunbirds built a 12-point lead by halftime, fueled by a balanced offensive effort that included 10 three-pointers. The Sharks narrowed the gap in the second half but were hindered by 16 turnovers, allowing the Sunbirds to maintain control and clinch the win.
The game began with the Sunbirds establishing control early, highlighted by
Nick Davidson's layup and a defensive rebound within the first minute. They maintained momentum with a series of successful three-pointers, including a notable three-pointer by
Seth Brown at 14:44, assisted by
Brandon Gibson Jr., expanding their lead. Despite the Sharks' attempts to close the gap, the Sunbirds' bench contributed significantly, adding 17 points to their total.
Throughout the half, the 'Birds capitalized on turnovers, scoring nine points off the Sharks' nine turnovers. The home team showcased strong rebounding, with 19 total rebounds, eight offensive and 11 defensive, that helped sustain their offensive efforts. The half concluded with the Sunbirds leading 44–32.
Fresno Pacific set the tone early in the second half with a series of key plays, starting with a layup by
Harrison Pennisi followed by an
Isaac Peralta steal and assist to
Logan Kilbert, who converted a fast-break layup at 18:19, extending their lead to 50-35. Davidson contributed significantly with a three-pointer at 10:37 and a layup at 9:53, helping to maintain a comfortable lead.
The Sharks were able to close the gap with a few successful 3-pointers, but the 'Birds responded effectively, highlighted by Peralta's three-pointer at 5:02 and a timely layup at 4:36, ensuring they stayed ahead. The half ended with both teams scoring 40 points, but the Sunbirds maintained their overall advantage, concluding the contest with an 84-72 victory.
Peralta led the way with 15 points, six assists, and two steals, showing his impact on both ends of the court. Davidson scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and added six rebounds. Brown contributed 12 points, all from beyond the arc, converting three of ten attempts. The native from Chino Hills is fifth in the PacWest in 3-point field goals and fourth in field goals per game.
Liam Switzer added 10 points on efficient shooting, making five of his seven field goal attempts.
