Sunbirds Shutout Silverswords In Conference Opener

FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Pacific women's soccer battled Chaminade to a 0-0 draw Thursday afternoon. Both teams were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, with the Sunbirds' goalkeeper making nine saves to secure the conference opener shutout.

"Strong start to conference, keeping a clean sheet," said head coach Roberto Hernandez. "It's huge for our team to be able to shut out our opponent. Super proud of the fight from our team, we're ready for the next game and I am confident we will get another positive result. Dalé Sunbirds!"

The match opened with both teams striving for early control. Defender Zoie Lango held off the Silverswords' initial attempts, moving the ball out of their line of sight and redirecting the momentum back in the Sunbirds' favor. Chaminade tested FPU's defense with a shot on goal at the 5:12 mark, which was saved by goalkeeper Ayana Kirisimasi. The 'Birds managed to pressure Chaminade with shots from the dynamic duo, senior Nadia Flores and sophomore Gizelle Aguirre. Aguirre nearly broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, hitting the right woodwork, but the period concluded scoreless at 0-0.

The second half featured a series of defensive stands and missed opportunities on both sides, as neither team managed to break the deadlock. Kirisimasi was instrumental, making several saves, including a notable stop against a deep attempt in the 46th minute and another crucial save in the 87th minute. Chaminade's goalkeeper was equally vigilant, denying shots from a persistent Flores in the 48th minute and another from junior midfielder Melanie Mendizabal shortly after.

Despite multiple corner kicks and shots on goal from both teams, the match concluded with the score tied at 0-0, marking the Sunbirds' first shutout of the season.  Last season, FPU set a new program high with seven shutouts, and this year Coach Hernandez's side will look to build on that strategy of defensive solidity.

The 'Birds now hold a record of 0-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in PacWest conference play.

NEXT UP: The Blue and Orange continue PacWest Conference play against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, September 27th at 5:30 pm. Come cheer on the 'Birds at Ramirez Field!
