SURPRISE, Ariz.- In the opening round of the PacWest Championships held in Surprise, Arizona, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds battled hard but ultimately fell short against the Biola Eagles in a postseason showdown. Despite determined efforts across the board, the Sunbirds were swept in both singles and doubles play, with the final tally standing at 0-4 in completed matches.
On court one, Yume Ueoku and Daimy Paula kept things close but came up short in a 4-6 loss. Malia Mitchell and Halle Faherty competed on court two but fell 2-6, while the third pairing of Margarita Munoz and Yalia Guiterrez wrapped up doubles with a 3-6 defeat. With the doubles point secured, Biola took early momentum into singles.
Despite the early doubles result, the Sunbirds showed resilience in singles action. Three matches remained unfinished, with Fresno Pacific players battling into decisive third sets. At No. 1 singles, Ueoku dropped the first set 4-6 but responded with a dominant 6-1 second set before the match was suspended. Similarly, Paula at No. 2 split sets with her opponent (6-4, 4-6), showing strong baseline play before the third set was halted. On court four, Faherty bounced back from a 0-6 first set to win the second 6-0, setting up a third set that was also left unfinished.
Biola clinched the match with three straight-set wins. Munoz fell 3-6, 2-6 on court three, Mitchell lost 3-6, 1-6 at No. 5, and Lily Villagomez dropped a 0-6, 0-6 decision at the No. 6 position.
