FRESNO, Calif. — The Streak Continues! Fresno Pacific volleyball dominated in the nail-biting 3-1 home victory over No. 5 Point Loma Nazarene on Monday, winning by scores of 25-13, 25-14, 14-25, 25-21. The Sunbirds clinched the first two sets with ease, lost the third, and rallied in the fourth to come back and capture their thirteenth straight win of the season.
"It's incredible what you can accomplish if you just believe. We knew coming into this match it was going to be a battle," said head coach
Kelsee Montagna. "We have been playing extremely well so it was making sure we had enough gas in the tank after two other big matches last weekend. We knew they were going to score big points but it was all about how we were going to respond."
Fresno Pacific secured an unforgetabble opening set with a .440 hitting percentage, setting the tone for the match. FPU started the first set assertively, building their energy off the influx of pink fans in the bleachers for Dig Pink Night. To kick things off,
Cambria Waites and
Geneva Elliott contributed thundering kills with
Mikayla Weiss playing a part in each one. Defensive efforts from the team, including blocks by Waites and Elliott, further bolstered the Sunbirds' position. A significant momentum shift occurred midway through the set as the Sunbirds capitalized on Point Loma's errors. Weiss's service ace and additional kills from Waites and
Itzel Aguayo widened the margin. The set concluded with a service error from Point Loma, allowing Fresno Pacific to win 25-13.
The second set began with the Sunbirds asserting control early, with Elliott and Waites standing guard at the net to establish a 2-0 lead.
Rachel Plantinga made her presence known with a service ace and key kills from Aguayo and Waites kept the momentum going with a 6-1 run for the 'Birds. Point Loma managed to cut into the lead, but the Blue and Orange maintained steady pressure with strong offensive contributions from
Makayla Smith and Elliott. Despite a brief rally by PLNU, which narrowed the gap to 15-10, the Sunbirds closed the set quickly with Waites on the serving line. A sequence of kills from Weiss and
Madelyn Feramisco helped secure the set, having bounced a ball in the center of the court.
In the third set, the 'Birds faced an uphill battle as Point Loma quickly established momentum. Despite early contributions from Feramisco and Elliott, the team struggled to mount a sustained comeback. Weiss and Elliott combined for a crucial block, but the Sunbirds were unable to capitalize on these efforts. Point Loma maintained pressure until multiple service errors gave the Sunbirds a chance to narrow the gap. However, the set concluded with Fresno Pacific trailing as the visitors secured a 25-14 win.
"After the third set, we had to remind ourselves how we got up two sets in the first place. They needed to just stick to the game plan, remember their training, and play with their heart. I am so incredibly proud of this team. And the best part about it is, there is still MUCH MORE volleyball to come!"
No. 5 Point Loma opened the fourth set with a strong offensive surge, quickly establishing a 7-0 lead through a series of kills from their pins and middle. The Sunbirds responded with a front-row kill from Weiss and consecutive service aces by Feramisco, cutting into the deficit and shifting momentum slightly. The Sunbirds continued to chip away at PLNU's lead. Aguayo and Feramisco contributed key kills in the final set, taking advantage of overpasses and openings down the line. The Weiss and Aguayo dynamic tallied block after block for the Sunbirds, creating a palpable energy in the pink-filled stands. This effort brought the score to a 19-19 tie. In the closing stages, Smith's pivotal kills, combined with Weiss's guidance, propelled the team to a 25-21 comeback in the set.
Fresno Pacific holds a perfect 13-0 overall record and is 2-0 in PacWest play. As of the latest AVCA national poll, the Sunbirds are receiving votes to earn a spot in the Top 25.
