AZUSA, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team traveled down to Cougar Soccer Field to take on (RV) Azusa Pacific in a non-conference match on Saturday evening. The Sunbirds held off the highly regarded team in the first half, before the Cougars netted the sole goal of the match in the 56th minute.
Throughout the half, the Sunbirds' defense remained resilient, countering Azusa Pacific's offensive pushes. Despite multiple corner kicks and shots from Azusa Pacific, the Sunbirds held firm, closing the half with a 0-0 tie. Sunbirds' goalkeeper Kirisimasi recorded seven saves in the match, including four in the first half and three in the second half, while facing 19 shots
The second half began with the Sunbirds aiming to equalize, but Azusa Pacific maintained pressure. Kirisimasi made crucial saves in the 46th and 51st minutes to keep the score level early in the half. However, Azusa Pacific broke through with a goal in the 56th minute, putting them ahead 1-0.
The Sunbirds pressed for a response, with
Rosie Farina and
Mackenzie Madron each attempting shots, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Despite continued efforts and a late shot by
Jayah Fonseca, the Sunbirds could not alter the scoreboard. The half concluded with Azusa Pacific holding a 1-0 advantage.
Fresno Pacific fell to 0-6-2 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play.
"Proud of the group, we hung in there with a program who is receiving votes and projected to finish Top 4 in the PacWest," said head coach
Roberto Hernandez. "We showed we can compete with the top. Unfortunately, we fell short, but we're happy with the progress that the team is making. We are excited for the next conference game on Saturday."
