FRESNO, Calif. - In the closely contested matchup against Westmont, the FPU women's soccer team netted a season-high two goals with the help of
Karyssa Lopez and
Karyme Hernandez. The Warriors tried breaking ahead of the Sunbirds, but Fresno Pacific held fast and nearly closed the gap in the second half.
The match between Fresno Pacific and Westmont began with both teams testing each other's defenses early. Senior
Nadia Flores had an early attempt saved by Westmont's goalkeeper in the third minute. Soon after,
Madisyn Anderson got in on the action and won a quick scramble at the goal, only to narrowly miss to the right of the cage.
Westmont took the lead in the 11th minute when Skyler McNamara scored, assisted by Amelia Villa. At the 21-minute mark, the Warriors made another attempt to score, but defender
Karyssa Lopez blocked an open shot on goal to keep the score 0-1.
Fresno Pacific responded in the 41st minute when Lopez scored to leveling the playing field. Lopez bobbled the ball from the goalie's initial save, which gave it just enough momentum to roll past the Warrior goalkeeper and tie the score 1-1.
Coming out of the half, Westmont applied heavy pressure to the Sunbirds' defensive line, slipping past them on several occasions. Strong defensive moves by Hernandez,
Sophie Rosales, and Lopez kept the Sunbirds moving back upfield, while goalkeeper
Katelyn Gonzalez, managed seven saves overall.
In the 83rd minute, Hernandez's penalty shot was stopped by the Warrior'ss goalkeeper but she redeemed herself with a rebound goal, narrowing the deficit to 3-2. Ultimately, the Sunbirds could not find the equalizer as the clock expired.
Fresno Pacific's record stands at 0-7-2 overall and 0-2-2 in conference play.
