Lady 'Birds Soar Past Jessup in First Conference Win

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Fresno Pacific women's soccer captured their first conference victory of the season in the 4-3 triumph over Jessup University. The Sunbirds made it happen with an early three-goal burst in the first half against the Warriors.

The Sunbirds were a force to reckon with in the first half, capitalizing on multiple opportunities to net a season-high three goals at the start. In the ninth minute, the Sunbirds overpowered the Warrior's defense with shots, allowing Abby Cano Ledezma to cross it to Gizelle Aguirre, who scored it into the right corner of the net. The sophomore forward applied pressure to the Warriors, capturing another goal for the Sunbirds at the 18th minute, thanks to an assist from Damaris Lopez.

Only a few minutes later, Karyssa Lopez was in the perfect spot to use her head on a corner kick and knocked the ball past the Warriors' goalkeeper, securing a 3-0 lead for the Sunbirds. The phenomenal corner kick cross came from Lopez, who tallied two assists overall in the match. In the final minute of the half, Jessup responded with a goal of their own, but the Sunbirds maintained a 3-1 advantage going into halftime.

In the second half, the Warriors made a dynamic comeback and added another goal to draw within one. In the 56th minute, Sonoma State transfer Takoah Castillo beat the Warriors' goalkeeper in a penalty kick, sending it flying to the left side of the goal, restoring the Sunbirds' two-goal lead at 4-2. 10 minutes later Jessup would knock in a third, but despite their attempts to equalize - including a saved shot by Ayana Kirisimasi - the game concluded with Fresno Pacific triumphing 4-3. The Warriors' Mackenzie Wright scored all three Jessup goals to register a hat trick in the defeat.

"It's amazing to get the first win of conference," said FPU head coach Roberto Hernandez. "Proud of the resilience of the team to keep fighting, we had great moments throughout the match and looking to build on top of that. We will continue to build and are excited to finish off our last four games strong and make a run in the PacWest!"

The Sunbirds are now 1-7-5 overall and 1-2-4 in conference play.
