Undefeated 'Birds Sweep Past Jessup

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After a long week that included a memorable home victory over a top-5 opponent, Fresno Pacific wrapped up the weekend with a clean sweep of Jessup University on Saturday evening. The PacWest Team of the Week collected their tenth sweep of the season, fifteenth straight win, and left the Warrior Arena with a 3-0 conference record.

The last time Fresno Pacific and Jessup faced off was at the Special Events Center in a thrilling five-set showdown. The 'Birds came back to win it all against the Warriors and they proved their dominance yet again on the Warriors' turf in the Saturday match.

The match began with a back-and-forth opening, as both teams traded early points. Geneva Elliott and Cambria Waites were instrumental, each delivering key kills to keep the scores level. Despite service errors by both teams, Makayla Smith's service ace helped the 'Birds maintain momentum, tying the score at various points. Fresno Pacific capitalized on errors from Jessup, pulling ahead with a series of blocks and precise kills, including contributions from Madelyn Feramisco and Mikayla Weiss.

The second set commenced with the Sunbirds gaining an early lead, supported by a service ace from Feramisco and a kill by Smith, creating momentum. Despite Jessup's initial points, the Sunbirds responded swiftly, evening the score at 2-2 and then extending their advantage to 4-2. The set was marked by efficient plays from Waites and Weiss, contributing multiple kills that kept the Sunbirds in front.

In the third set, the Sunbirds quickly gained momentum, opening with a 5-0 run. Several Sunbirds kept the momentum going in the set, until Weiss sealed the win with a kill, concluding the match with a final score of 25-20.

Waites led the Sunbirds' effort with 16 kills on 26 attempts, finishing with a .538 hitting percentage and contributing 17.5 points. She is four service aces away from hitting a personal milestone. Elliott recorded nine kills and four total blocks, accumulating 11.5 points with a .615 hitting percentage. Weiss directed the offense, tallying 25 assists and adding eight digs to her performance. Smith delivered from the service line with three aces and added five digs.

Fresno Pacific holds a perfect 15-0 overall record with a 3-0 standing in PacWest play. The Sunbirds have climbed the PacWest standings and claim the number two spot below Point Loma by virtue of playing one fewer conference game so far. Monday's victory over the then-5th ranked PLNU Sea Lions was one of six inter-PacWest non-conference games played so far this season by the Sunbirds, a result of the PacWest Conference's decision to change the number of conference clashes from 20 to just 12 after last season. The Sunbirds are 9-0 this year against PacWest opponents, but only three of those matches have counted toward their conference mark.

NEXT UP: The 'Birds have a brief four-day hiatus before traveling south to face Azusa Pacific on October 16th at 7pm.
