FRESNO, Calif.- It was all Fresno Pacific Sunbirds from start to finish as they dominated the Jessup Warriors in a 3-0 sweep Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Sunbird Classic.
The first set saw several lead changes as Jessup fought to keep pace with Fresno Pacific.
Three straight points off kills from
Claire Corippo and
Geneva Elliott as well as a service ace from
Makayla Smith opened the lead up to three for the 'Birds at 9-6.
Fresno Pacific never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the first set taking it 25-21.
In the first, six different 'Birds recorded one kill or more with Smith, Corripo, and
Mia Gilcrest leading the way with three.
The second set proved to be the most tightly contested of the match as it feature 11 tied scores and six lead changes.
The 'Birds jumped out and took the lead behind kills from Corippo, Gilcrest, and
Madison Girnius.
Jessup stormed back and took the lead, but the Sunbirds took back the momentum themselves converting seven of the next ten points.
Knotted at 26-26, the 'Birds finally broke away to clinch the set taking advantage of a pair of errors on the Warriors.
The third set was all Fresno Pacific as they took the lead off the first point and never looked back.
At one point, the 'Birds led by more than eight and won the set easily 25-19.
The set was highlighted by three kills from Smith and Gilcrest and a trio of service aces from Smith,
Devyn Castaneda, and Gilcrest.
The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds will look to build on this momentum as they head into the Route 92 Classic next weekend up north.
