FRESNO, Calif. - Four straight games... four straight draws. After the opening day defeat to #5 CSU Los Angeles, the FPU Men's Soccer team have come as close as possible to victory every time they've taken the pitch since. That draw streak came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Sunbirds took down CSU East Bay 1-0 in their last game before PacWest Conference play begins.
Fabricio Pozas Saboya's 54th minute header was enough to secure the win for the 'Birds, in what was also new Associate Head Coach Cameron Shahrokhi's first regular season W in charge. The winning moment happened after an extended possession where FPU strung together 16 passes before
Chris Macias' cross into the box was met by the head of Saboya.
"This win was definitely a high point for us this season," said captain and leading scorer Lucas Ribiero. "We've been working really hard and we deserved that!" Having taken points now in five of the first six regular season games, the Sunbirds head into PacWest action primed, ready, and full of confidence. Ribiero adds, "there can't be a better way to head into conference play."
Off the pitch and up in the press box, FPU swimmer and lead soccer commentator Enzo Duffey did something very special to honor National Hispanic Heritage Month - for the first time in FPU history, both the Men's and Women's soccer games were called entirely in spanish. Any viewers not in-person at Ramirez Field were treated to Enzo's enthusiastic spanish commentary live on the PacWest Network.
The Sunbirds open up conference play Thursday night at Ramirez Field against PacWest newcomers Vanguard University at 5pm. The match will also be streaming live on the PacWest Network.
