EMPORIA, Kan. – The FPU track and field team turned in another strong day at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Friday, qualifying for finals in four events.
As the first Sunbird to compete on Saturday,
Shemar Palmer won his heat in the men's 200, qualifying him for Saturday's finals with a time of 20.67. Minutes later,
Sariyah Copeland followed with a heat victory of her own on the women's side, turning in a mark of 23.15.
The men's 4x400 relay team of Palmer,
Kalobe Jimenez,
Zavian Cook and
Garrett Fox took third in their heat and seventh overall with a team time of 3:08.86. The mark was good enough for the Blue and Orange to qualify for finals for the first time in program history in the event.
The FPU women closed out the day with a sixth-place finish in the women's 4x400 relay prelims, as Copeland,
Brianna Green,
Ariana Vera and
Kenadhi Haslip teamed up for a time of 3:38.88. They, too, will take part in Saturday's finals, marking the fourth straight year the Sunbird women have qualified.
Jimenez also took part in the men's 110 hurdle prelims on Friday, marking one of just 20 runners to make it to Nationals.
Defending runner-up
Dejan Mileusnic kicks things off for the Sunbirds on Saturday morning in the men's javelin. FPU will have a chance for a championship in seven events, and all details are listed below.
