AZUSA, Calif.- The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds ended the season on a high note Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with the Azusa Pacific Cougars.
In game one, FPU brought in the first run of the game in the second, a solo home run from Donte Valdez, his 10th of the season.
Answering back quickly, the Cougars jumped back scoring seven runs in the second and third innings to take a 7-1 lead.
In the fifth, the Sunbirds managed to get another run across the plate with a single from Chris Clement.
Azusa Pacific added five more insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to run rule the game ending it in the eighth giving the Cougars the 12-2 victory.
In game two, the Sunbirds bounced back quickly with a three run home run from Andrew Valdez in the first to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
Trent Mallonee kept the offense rolling in the second with a single to right field to score another run for the 'Birds followed by another run in the third brought in by another single from Clement.
The Cougars broke their scoring drought in the fourth with a solo home run, their lone run of the game.
The offense kept firing for the Sunbirds who score two more in the fifth, another single from Clement and Shane Pursell to put FPU up 7-1.
Both teams would end the game unable to put any more runs across the board as the Sunbirds took the victory in seven.
In the last game of his career, senior Jaylen Rodriguez dominated on the mound pitching a complete game allowing just one run on seven hits with one walk and striking out seven.
A. Valdez's three home run in game two marked his 12th of the season, making him come up just shy of tying the FPU single season record at 14.
