Game Recap: Baseball |

Early Offense Dictates Split in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif.-The team that scored first held on for the win in each game as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (12-12 overall) split a non-conference double-header with the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles (10-10 overall) Friday evening at the Golden Eagles Field.

CUI jumped out in front with a three run first inning and held on to the 4-2 decision in game one. Fresno Pacific salvaged the split behind a four-run first inning in a 7-2 victory on the first day of the two-day series.

CUI put the first three runners on, with a two-run triple sparking the three-run inning against Sunbird starter Connor Semone.

A solo homer in the 2nd gave Concordia a 4-0 lead.

Semone settled in from there and threw up zeroes for the rest of the game.

The Sunbird offense scratched across a run in the sixth when a double play scored Jordan Smith.

FPU threatened in the ninth, trailing by three, thanks to a two-out rally.

Two walks and a single loaded the bases before a walk forced in a run and put the tying run on second.

Jacob Solorio just missed one, flying out in a pinch-hit at bat to end the game.

The Sunbirds offense was aggressive at the start of game two with Trent Mallonee starting the game with a single. After Gabe Henderson reached on an error, Andrew Valdez walked.

One batter later, Griffith Fenn drove in two runs with a single into centerfield.

Donte Valdez singled in another run as did Josh Pernetti to give FPU a 4-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Jaylen Rodriguez, who went the distance in a complete game, performance in which he allowed just four baserunners.

Andrew Valdez belted his 8th homer of the year and Josh Pernetti drove in another run in the 5th to stretch the advantage to 6-0.

CUI got those two back against Rodriguez in the bottom of the inning.

However, Andrew Valdez added an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the sixth that helped settle things.

Rodriguez locked up the win to make sure FPU stayed at .500 for the season entering Saturday.

Fresno Pacific wraps up the series against the Golden Eagles in Irvine with a double-header beginning at Noon on Saturday.
