FRESNO, Calif.- From riding high on Friday night to feeling to like they missed a few opportunities in a pair of losses Saturday, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (5-5 overall, 1-3 PacWest) fell 1-0 in 9 innings before falling 16-3 in the series finale with the Point Loma Sea Lions (11-3 overall, 3-1 PacWest) at the FPU Diamond.
Rylan Tinsley worked around some difficult early innings to throw six scoreless innings but FPU's offense couldn't muster much against the Sea Lions in the first game of the double-header.
Tim Ruiz worked two scoreless innings before a fly ball carried over the right field fence in the top of the ninth to give PLNU the difference maker.
In game two, Point Loma mustered early offense but
Gabe Henderson responded with a solo homer over the centerfield fence to tie the game at one.
However, PLNU scored four in the 2
nd inning and one in the fourth before an eight run inning in the fifth opened up the game.
The 'Birds answered just the run in the 4
th when a run scored on a double-play.
Donte Valdez hit his third homer of the game but FPU couldn't get any closer than 14-3 as the Sea Lions added a few more in the 7
th to finalize the score.
Fresno Pacific heads to Honolulu for series against Chaminade and Hawai'i Pacific before returning home on March 15
th against Hawai'i Hilo.
