FRESNO, Calif.- Flexing its muscle as the best offensive team in the PacWest, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (5-3 overall, 1-1 PacWest) powered their way to a 13-3 victory before settling for a split, after an 8-5 loss, to the #6 Point Loma Sea Lions (9-3 overall, 1-1 PacWest) Friday evening at the FPU Diamond.
Tommy Rover drove in five runs, including his first homer of the season, to spearhead FPU's three-homer game against PLNU's all-conference starting pitcher.
Connor Semone was excellent on the mound again for FPU, setting the tone with 7 solid innings to improve to 3-0 on the season.
FPU broke an early pitcher's duel in the third inning, sparked by
Griffith Fenn's laser into right center that started the inning with a double.
Fenn came around on a
Trent Mallonee single and then a hard-hit ball by
Jordan Smith that was ruled an error.
Rover produced his first RBI of the game and Valdez drove in another to give FPU a 3-0 lead.
The 'Birds hung a five-spot in the fourth on a two-run single by Mallonee and capped by a two run homer by Rover.
Gabe Henderson doubled in a run in the middle of the inning.
Josh Pernetti obliterated a ball over the scoreboard in right center field and cleared the property fence on the other side for his first homer of the year.
Jaylen Rodriguez worked a scoreless eighth for FPU in relief of Semone.
Andrew Valdez capped the game with the third of those home runs, a no-doubter down the left field line, to force the run rule in the bottom of the 8
th.
In game two, the 'Birds appeared to pick up where they left off, striking for four runs in the bottom of the third.
Rover added another RBI on the day, with a run producing groundout and Valdez had another hard hit ball that was misplayed but produced a run.
Pernetti doubled home a pair in the inning.
But Point Loma responded with a six-run fourth inning and never let go of the lead.
While their starter settled down, Valdez still tagged a homer the opposite way, getting it out down the right field line for his third in four games.
PLNU answered back with two more and that proved to be enough for the Sea Lions in the seven inning game.
The two teams will conclude their first conference series of the season on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 11 a.m.
