FRESNO, Calif.- Felicia Dourva's first quarter buzzer-beater gave the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (18-6 overall, 12-4 PacWest) a lead it would never relinquish as they exploded for a 29-second quarter in route to a 78-56 victory over the Chaminade Silverswords (3-21 overall, 1-18 PacWest) Monday inside the Special Events Center.
The win secures FPU's post-season spot in the PacWest tournament hosted by Point Loma in San Diego the 2
nd week of March.
It also improves FPU's record to 10-0 at home this season, the best mark of the NCAA era.
Dourva caught an outlet pass from
Joleen Corona with 5 seconds left and turned it into a floating three-pointer as the horn sounded to put FPU up 18-15 after a plodding first quarter.
From there,
Bre Hurt kickstarted the offense with nine points and the 'Bird's 53% shooting in the second provided more than enough separation from the visitors.
FPU shot 15 free-throws in the 2
nd quarter, eventually matching their second high of 31 attempts from the line, knocking down 71% of those opportunities on the night.
The massive quarter gave FPU a 16 point lead at half.
The 'Birds shot 32% in the quarter that weren't the 2
nd but knocked down a trio of threes in the fourth-quarter.
While Dourva and Hurt led the way with a combined 32 points, the 'Birds received 34 points from the bench as nine different players hit one field goal and 12 different players scored at least one point.
The 'Birds remain in 2
nd place in the PacWest and stayed at #5 in the D2CSC West Region Rankings that were released Monday.
Fresno pacific will put their spotless home record up against Hawai'i Hilo on Thursday when they host the Vulcans at 5:00 p.m. in the Special Events Center.
