'Birds Battle Until Final Out in Series Finale

CARSON, Calif.- What almost turned into a super comeback ended with the tying run on third and the winning run on second as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-1 overall) fell 10-9 in the series finale against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros Sunday afternoon at Toro Field.

The 'Birds found themselves trailing midway through the ball game as the hosts capitalized on a litany of walks while utilizing the long ball, but FPU kept the pressure on until the final pitch.

The 'Birds jumped out to a lead for the third straight game. This time they utilized four walks in the first inning to force home the opening run.

In the second, Jordan Smith started the inning with a single and moved over on a base hit by Chris Clement.

Gabe Henderson's sacrifice fly and Andrew Valdez's double gave FPU a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 2nd.

But Dominguez Hills scored once in the inning and then loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, forcing out FPU starter Sam Cooper.

Craig Yanagihara got out of the third with the 3-1 lead intact but the Toros knocked him out of the game and blasted a grand slam to jump in front 6-3 after four innings.

Tommy Rover doubled down the right field line to plate Smith and Henderson in the top of the sixth, pulling FPU within one but Dominguez Hills answered with a run in the
bottom of the inning to make the score 7-5.

The Toros added a two-run homer in the bottom of the 7th to extend their lead to 9-5.

The 'Birds scored one in the eighth but left two runners on and the tying run at the plate in the eighth before Dominguez Hills extended the lead to 10-6 heading into the 9th.

Down four to start the inning, FPU loaded the bases with one out and scored a run on the wild pitch with Rover at the dish.

After a strikeout, Andrew Valdez singled home two runs to put the tying run on base and bring the go ahead run to the plate.

The 'Birds loaded the bases again but a fielder's choice ended the game.

Fresno Pacific secured the series on Saturday and will return to Fresno for the home opener this week, welcoming in Sonoma State for a three-game series beginning on Friday.
