EL SEGUNDO, Calif - FPU Men's Basketball alum Perry Huang ('10) has joined the Los Angeles Lakers' G-League affiliate South Bay Lakers as an assistant coach. Huang joins the Lakers organization after seven seasons with the Seattle Storm, where he helped the team lift two WNBA titles.
New Lakers Head Coach JJ Reddick was instrumental in the hire, as their connection dates back to 2018 when both were with the New Orleans Pelicans. Reddick was a player for New Orleans, Huang an assistant on their G-League team, the Birmingham Squadron. "During training camp, both teams trained together," Huang remembered. "I used to rebound for JJ. We had mutual connections in the game." Huang began his role with the Lakers on October 2nd. "It was a pretty surreal moment when I walked in the training center [on my first day] and JJ dabbed me up," Huang said.
After wrapping up his playing days at FPU, Hunag became an assistant for Cal State San Marcos (2011-12) and Monterey Peninsula College (2012-15). He then moved into the professional ranks as an associate for the Santa Cruz Warriors from 2014-16. This followed with stints for the Northern Arizona Suns (2017-19), Erie Bayhawks (2019-21), and Birmingham Squadron (2021-23). In 2018 he started with the WNBA's Seattle Storm as a video coordinator before being elevated to assistant coach in 2021. "It was extremely difficult to leave Seattle," Huang said. "In my mind, it's a risk. The WNBA is exploding. I wanted to be a part of that. But coaching in the NBA is my dream."
Huang is expected to run defense for the South Bay Lakers, and will be heavily involved with players who will be playing for both the Lakers and the G-League squad - including Lakers 2024 draft pick Bronny James. "A huge part of our job will be to help develop Bronny and make him into a full-fledged NBA player," Huang said. "As it is with all the players down in the G-League."
Huang's first game on the bench for the South Bay Lakers will be on November 9 against the Salt Lake City Stars. Everyone at FPU is thrilled for Perry as he begins this exciting new chapter in his coaching career.
