IRVINE, Calif.- It was a record breaking morning for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds Women's Cross Country team at the PacWest Championships at Great Park.
Julissa Avila led all Sunbirds with a tenth place finish earning her Second-Team All PacWest honors. Avila's finish highlights a massive improvement on the year as she improved 15 spots from last year's PacWest Championship finish.
The freshman duo of
Mattie Whipple and
Gaby Ramirez also joined Avila on the All-PacWest team, finishing 20th and 21st respectively. earning them Third Team honors.
Ariana Womack showed her power late in the race moving up nine spots to finish 25th shattering her lifetime best with a time of 22:17.6.
Junior
Julia Martinez rounded out the scoring for the 'Birds 14 seconds later finishing 29th also earning her a lifetime best.
The Sunbirds finished the race earning fifth place, coming in just behind Azusa Pacific..
"Today was an historically great performance for our women, running the third-fastest team time in school history," said head coach
Ray Winter. "We have a bunch of nationally ranked teams in the PacWest to contend with and we kept them very honest today." "Though we finished 5th out of 13 teams, the caliber of our running was better than any other PacWest effort in school history."
Up next, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds will head to NCAA West Regional Championships in Billings, Montana on November 9th.
"I think these ladies are going to be ready to have our best West Regional performance ever in two weeks, which was a 12th place finish in 2019. They are really on a roll," concluded Winter.
