Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady 'Birds Held Scoreless; Fall 1-0 to Warriors on Road

SANTA BARBARA, Calif -  FPU Women's Soccer fell 1-0 to PacWest opponent Westmont on Saturday.  The loss ends a brutal three-game stretch against PacWest powerhouses for the Sunbirds.

The decisive goal scored by the Warriors came in the 36th minute when Westmont's Kennah Shaffer was left unmarked by the Sunbird defense on a free kick taken just outside FPU's half.  After receiving the ball and taking a few touches toward goal, she sent one flying in over the head of FPU's Monique Nevarez and into the far corner.  Nevarez appeared to get crossed up on the play and was unable to make any attempt at a save on the long range shot.

Nadia Flores, Brooke Uceda, and Chloe Mortensen accounted for FPU's three on-target attempts at goal.  While the offense is still working its way up to full speed this season, the FPU defense is keeping them in each and every game.  Karyssa Lopez hasn't missed a minute of action this season, and the rotating corp around her that includes Uceda, Mortensen, Jesslyn McCaveZoie Lango, and others have helped shift the direction the program is heading.

Defensively, Nevarez continues to make an impact each and every game with her sizable number of saves - adding eight more to her already massive season total.  Prior to this three-game slide in which the 'Birds have conceded just five, they held opponents scoreless for over 400 consecutive minutes played.  With Nevarez between the sticks and Lopez and company in front of her, FPU will find themselves in the mix all season long.

Although the loss makes it three in a row for Roberto Hernandez's side, it's important to know that two of those losses came against nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific and Concordia and were closely-contested from start to finish.  Westmont is currently sitting near the top of the conference standings, with their only PacWest loss coming against reigning national champions Point Loma.  It's quite a turnaround for an FPU side that was getting blown out by these same opponents not very long ago - the same three opponents outscored them 9-1 just last season.  That they are now going toe-to-toe for long stretches against them says a lot about the resiliency and progress this Lady 'Birds side has displayed in 2024.

Up next is a PacWest clash with Academy of Art in San Francisco on Saturday.  Kickoff is set for 1:30pm PT.  The 'Birds defeated Art U 2-0 in a non-conference meeting less than a month ago in Fresno, with goals from Flores and Maria Garcia.
