Second Straight Sweep for Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif - It was a second consecutive 3-0 sweep for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center as they took care of business against the Dominican Penguins.

The first set proved to be the most competitive, with 13 tie scores and eight lead changes and neither team holding a lead early.

Knotted at 14-14, the Penguins put together a run of five straight points to take their largest lead of the game.

The Sunbirds went on a run of their own with the help of kills from Cambria Waites and Mia Gilcrest to tie the score back up at 22-22 and take the lead a point later.

Dominican countered retaking the lead, but the Sunbirds managed to fight off set point as the teams continued to trade point for point.

The late breakthrough for the Sunbirds finally came at 27-27 when the 'Birds won two straight points behind a kill from Makayla Smith and an error on the Penguins to take the first 29-27.

In the second set, Fresno Pacific took control early and maintained it throughout, with no ties or lead changes.

The 'Birds had 13 kills and hit .184, led by Gilcrest and Corippo once again.

Dominican struggled offensively, hitting just .051 with seven attack errors, allowing the Sunbirds to cruise to a 25-18 victory.

The third set was closer, with 2 ties early in the set.

The Sunbirds recorded 14 kills, but Dominican's strong blocking made it tough to pull away.

Still, Fresno Pacific's balanced attack, along with contributions from Waites, who had 36 assists in the match, helped secure the set and the sweep with a 25-22 win.

Corripo led the Sunbirds and had a season high 14 kills.

The Sunbirds will have a quick turnaround as they welcome the Vanguard Lions Monday afternoon at 3pm at the Special Events Center.
