'Birds Split a Pair at The Joust

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds split a pair of games Saturday afternoon as they opened up the 2024 season at The Joust.

GAME ONE

The Sunbirds faced off against the University of Redlands Bulldogs in game one.

After back-back possessions for both teams came up empty to start the game, the Sunbirds were the first to break through with a goal from Tatum Benson.

The Bulldogs quickly answered tying the score 1-1.

Less than twenty seconds later, Benson found the back of the net to put the 'Birds ahead by one.

The 'Birds would end the first period with a pair of goals from Regan Azevedo and Hannah Walker to take a 4-1 lead into the second.

Fresno Pacific's defense completely stifled the Bulldogs leaving them scoreless for the entire second period.

Goals from Natalie Kisling, Benson, and Maggie Cook increased the 'Birds lead to six heading into the third.

Emily Lopez-Ibarra added her name to the growing list of scoring Sunbirds converting a penalty shot in the fifth minute to put the 'Birds ahead 8-1.

The scoring drought for the Bulldogs finally ended as they converted on a power play.

Strong defense from the Sunbirds converted into more offense as Lopez-Ibarra, Maddie Murad, and Benson added to the growing goal tally to end the third 11-3.

Fresno Pacific would score first to open the fourth, Murad's third of the game.

As the fourth continued, the game drew to a defensive stalemate with both goalies recording multiple saves.

The Bulldogs would score one final goal as the fourth ended giving the Sunbirds the 12-4 win.

Benson led all Sunbirds with four goals.

GAME TWO

The Sunbirds faced off against the #10 Tritons in a night match for game two.

Fresno Pacific struggled early to find an answer for UCSD's frenzy of offense.

The Tritons scored six goals in the first period to take an early commanding lead 6-0 heading into the second period.

UCSD added another goal to start the second before the Sunbirds answered for their first goals of the game from Benson and Regan Azevedo on back-back possessions.

At 8-2, the Tritons converted four more goals before Ali Hepner converted with .44 seconds left in the second to bring the Sunbirds within 10 to end the second.

The struggles continued for the 'Birds in the fourth as the Tritons scored three more unanswered goals.

The lone goal for the Sunbirds in the third came from Summer Fulton.

UCSD would end the third with another pair of goals to go up 17-4.

Three more goals would mark the fourth period for the Tritons as the Sunbirds struggles continued.

Benson would end the game with a pair of goals as the Sunbirds fell 20-6.

The Sunbirds will head to Merced to face off against UC Merced on Saturday morning at 11am.
