Second Half Dooms Sunbirds Against CUI

FRESNO, Calif.-A halftime advantage slipped away at the start of the second half in the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-12 overall, 0-6 PacWest) 77-62 loss to the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles (8-6 overall, 5-3 PacWest) Wednesday evening in the Special Events Center.

Ryan Abbott spurred the Sunbirds to a strong start, scoring 9 points in the first half and Ryas Vang scored the final four points of the period to stake FPU out to a 30-27 lead at halftime.

The Sunbirds were vicious on the defensive end over the first twenty minutes and held Concordia to just 1-7 from beyond the arc.

But the pendulum swung drastically in the second half as CUI jumped out on an 11-0 run that turned into a 22-5 stretch before FPU found its footing, and scoring, in the second half.

Isaac Peralta scored a bulk of his 17 points in the second half but it was not enough to overcome CUI catching fire from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles hit 8 of their first 10 three-point attempts in the half.

The Sunbirds also suffered due to turnovers after only surrendering four points in the first half, CUI scored 19 points off of FPU's turnovers to pull away.

Peralta finished with the game-high in points and Abbott added 15 while Harrison Pennisi put up 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Fresno Pacific returns to action on their home court Saturday, hosting Point Loma for the final meeting of the season between the programs, tipping off at 4:30 p.m. inside the Special Events Center.
