Elliott, Ogas Help 'Birds Edge Westmont in Five

FRESNO, Calif.-The wait was worth the excitement for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (6-6 overall, 3-1 PacWest) pulled out a five-set victory over the Westmont Warriors (5-7 overall, 2-3 PacWest) Saturday afternoon in the Special Events Center.

The match saw 33 total ties and 16 lead changes with each team pulling out a difficult set and each team cruising in a set before FPU won the decisive fifth set (25-27, 25-19, 28-26, 22-25, 15-6).

The first set was among the most contested as FPU got out to an early lead behind Makena Ogas and Geneva Elliott.

Elliott registered five early kills in the early going with Ogas complimenting her with four of her own. The 'Birds had their strongest offensive set in terms of kills in the first but Westmont battled back from every differential.

Fresno Pacific had set point in the first at 24-23, but Westmont pulled out the set 27-25.

Fresno Pacific took control in the second set with Ogas and Elliott again leading the way. The 'Birds distributed the ball throughout the set and hit an ultra efficient .353 for the set.

The third set was more similar to the first in its even nature. The match was tied at 15 separate points and the lead changed hands seven times.

But FPU overcame its worst attack percentage of the match with Catie Speas delivered consecutive aces to finish off the set.

The fourth set was mostly Westmont but the 'Birds deleted a ten-point deficit to pull within one at 23-22 before dropping the final two points.

The Sunbirds capitalized on the momentum in the fifth, pulling away behind Madison Girnius' pair of kills at the end.

FPU had some stellar offensive stretches but the overall numbers were muddied by a pair of stretches in the first and fourth sets.

Geneva Elliott led the way with 12 kills and was a part of 6 different blocks, including four solo blocks.

Makena Ogas added 11 kills while four other 'Birds had at least five.

Fresno Pacific continues its homestand by hosting Hawai'i Hilo Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the Special Events Center.
