Birds and Sharks Ends in a Scoreless Tie

FRESNO, Calif.- A wild game ended in a scoreless tie for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-7-1 overall, 0-1-1 conference) and the Hawaii Pacific University Sharks (0-4-3 overall, 0-0-2) Thursday night at Ramirez Field.

For the first 15 minutes of the game, the Sunbirds and Sharks traded possessions struggling to get the ball much past the midfield.

The Sharks first breakthrough scoring attempt came in the 23rd minute but Monique Nevarez was there and deflected the ball after which the Sharks followed with another shot but the ball missed barely wide left.

The Sunbirds countered with shots of their own from Maluhia Kekuawela in the 33rd, Maria Eir Magnusdottir in the 38th, and Nadia Flores in the 42nd but all of the shots were off target.

The first half drew to a close with both teams locked at 0-0.

The Sunbirds and the Sharks continued to trade unsuccessful shots into the early minutes of the second half.

In the 52nd minute, after a tie up in the midfield, Flores was awarded an automatic red after receiving a yellow early in the first half, leaving the Sunbirds to play a man down for the remainder of the match.

Despite a man down, the 'Birds managed to put the Sharks on the defense after Alyssa Avalos sent a cross to Alena Schenk who had a header on target that was saved at the last minute by Sophia Garrido.

Another altercation on the field in the 83rd led to another double yellow turned red on the Sharks who now matched the Sunbirds with a man down.

A free kick just outside the box was awarded to the Sunbirds in the 85th after the Sharks goal keeper received a straight red forcing the Sharks down to 9. The Sunbirds managed to get off the shot but it soared high over the post.

Both teams traded empty possessions as the half came to an end leaving the match in a scoreless draw.

The Sunbirds out shot the Sharks 13 to 10, with Magnusdottir leading the way with 5.

Fresno Pacific will end their four game home stand Saturday against Hawaii Hilo at 7:30pm at Ramirez Field.
