Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal Derails FPU's Comeback Bid

FRESNO, Calif.-A late, game-tying goal had the Sunbirds hopes sky high before the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros found the difference just seconds later to hand the FPU Women's Soccer team a 3-2 loss Saturday morning on Ramirez field.

Fresno Pacific commanded possession for the opening half hour and took a majority of the shots through the first half.

But with fifteen minutes in the half, Dominguez Hills began to develop some chances of their own. One of the chances left a Toro one v. one with FPU keeper Monique Nevarez. Nevarez came off her line to shut down the shot and prevent the score.

With the score still level in the 35th minute, CSUDH took a throw in from in front of their bench and pushed possession near midfield. The Toros launched the ball to the right edge of the '18 where their forward launched a shot back across to the left side of the goal for the opening tally.

The score remained 1-0 at the half despite FPU outshooting Dominguez Hills 8-2 in the first 45 minutes.

The 'Birds had the first real chance in the second half with Maria Magnusdottir beating the defense and setting up Diana Garcia at the top of the 18'. Garcia faked a trailing defender but ripped a shot right at the keeper, who made the save.

The Sunbirds had another chance just three seconds later, but the keeper made the angle tough, and the shot rolled just past the right post.

Magnusdottir created another incredible opportunity, dribbling down the right end line and delivering a cross that was tapped off the post while the Sunbirds remained at a deficit.

Minutes later, Magnusdottir tried the left side, dribbling through two defenders and taking a left footed shot that that went right of the goal as well.

But the 'Birds finally broke through after Diana Garcia drew a foul 30 yards away from goal. Garcia took the free kick and launched it toward goal, after a deflection, Mackenzie Madron hammered the equalizer into the back of the net, knotting the match at 1-1 with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

Dominguez Hills earned their own free kick just outside of the 18' and scored directly on the free kick in the 77th minute to regain the advantage.

The 'Birds rallied in the 87th minute with Karyssa Lopez lofting a free-kick all the way down the field and Magnusdottir headed a high bounce over the keeper to tie the match at 2-2.

But the celebration was short lived as the Toros raced down and found the top-right corner of the net less than a minute later to recover a 3-2 lead in the 89th minute.

That proved the difference as time ran out for FPU to try to catch lightning a second time.

The Sunbirds offense looked impressive throughout, despite the scoreline. FPU had 23 total shots, with just 8 coming on goal.

While the Sunbirds drop to 0-2, they will bounce back to take on Cal State San Marcos in their first road contest of the season on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
