'Birds Fall to Gators in Return Home

FRESNO, Calif.- A late penalty kick put the game out of reach, as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-6 overall) fell to the San Francisco State Gators (1-5 overall) 3-1 Tuesday evening on Ramirez Field.

Early in the first half, the Sunbirds and the Gators traded shots with FPU holding a slight edge on possession.

But SF State broke through first in the 20th minute for their first goal of the season to take the lead 1-0.

The remainder of the half was a defensive battle as both teams struggled to maintain possession.

In the 48th minute, Nadia Flores passed to Diana Garcia who gathered the ball and rocketed a shot that hit the back top right of the net from 25 yards deep to even the score 1-1.

The Gators regained the edge in the 66th minute with a long shot of their own that found a corner in the top left of the net to take the lead 2-1.

The Sunbirds continued to put shots up with attempts from Maria Magnusdottir and Tessa Simmons but both just missed.

A penalty was awarded to the Gators after a foul in the box in the 81st minute, which was converted to make the scoreline 3-1.

The 'Birds ended the match with 13 shots in total with five in the first and eight in second.

Fresno Pacific will open PacWest play next Monday, September 25th against Chaminade at 7:30pm on Ramirez Field.
