O'Fallon, Ill.- The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds issued a dominant performance against the Salem University Tigers in the opening round of the WWPA Championships Friday morning.
The game was never in question for the Sunbirds, who flexed their defense again and limited the Tigers to just 5 goals the whole match, tying Salem's second-lowest output this year.
The Sunbirds got their offense going behind
Hannah Walker who started the scoring for the day on a powerplay in the 4-minute mark in the 1
st quarter.
Tatum Benson and
Regan Azevedo added to the lead with goals of their own to close the 1
st quarter.
The scoring continued into the 2
nd quarter as
Rosemary Chapman netted a goal of her own to extend the Sunbirds lead to 4-0.
The offensive scoring frenzy continued for Fresno Pacific with Benson adding two goals of her own, Walker scoring her second of the day, and
Kristina Dupont scoring her first of the game to pull away from the Tigers 8-0.
The Sunbirds shut out came to an end in the 2-minute mark in the 2
nd quarter when the Tigers Shemiyah Ross scored on a penalty shot to finally give the Tigers their first point of the day.
The 3
rd quarter started off sloppy for the Sunbirds who turned over the ball four straight possessions. Despite those turnovers, the Tigers struggled to capitalize.
The drought finally came to an end as
Rosemary Chapman added her name to the score book with a penalty shot in the 4-minute-mark extending the Sunbirds commanding lead to 9-1.
The 3
rd quarter came to an end with two unanswered goals by the Tigers to bring them within six of the Sunbirds.
Benson added to her goal tally with an early 4
th quarter goal, with the assist coming from Natalie Kissling.
The Tigers fought hard for the remainder of the 4th quarter for two additional goals, but it was not enough as the Sunbirds took the match 10-5.
The Sunbirds as a team featured well balanced scoring with five different players scoring one or more goals.
Benson led the way for the Sunbirds with 4 goals, making this her sixth straight hat-trick performance.
Kissling tallied a season high 4 assists and 4 steals to help propel the Sunbirds to victory.
Fresno Pacific advances to the second round of the WWPA Championships to play Biola on Saturday at 12:15pm (Pacific Time).
