Back-to-back Homers Setup FPU for Series Victory Over Hawks

ALAMEDA, Calif.-A four-run first inning in game two led to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (21-17 overall, 15-8 PacWest) securing the series victory over the Holy Names Hawks (22-18 overall, 12-12 PacWest) bouncing back with an 8-3 win after falling 10-7 Monday at the College of Alameda.

Andrew Valdez continued to tear up pitching in April driving in 5 runs during the first inning of both games. It was his three-run homer, followed by a solo blast from Jared Aguilar that set FPU on its way in game two.

After a pair of walks to start the first game, Valdez capitalized with an RBI double to open the scoring.

But FPU would only score one more in the inning, with Tommy Rover coming home on a passed ball to make it 2-0.

Jared Aguilar kept Holy Names off the board in the first, but the Hawks tallied a run in the second inning after a pair of singles sandwiched a stolen base and cut the FPU advantage in half.

The Sunbirds added another run in the, capitalizing on a hit batter this time to start the inning. Jordan Smith and Koutarou Matsumaru both singled to extend the lead to 3-1.

Holy Names finally pushed Aguilar out of the game in the fifth with a four-run inning and took a 5-3 lead.

The Hawks tacked on two more runs in the seventh before FPU responded.

The 'Birds loaded the bases before Valdez's two run single brought the game back within two runs.

Aguilar backed it up by winning a long at bat before delivering a two-run double tucked inside the third base line and into the left field corner to tie the game at 7-7.

Holy Names regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth, putting the first two guys on in the inning in front of a three-run homer.

The 10-7 scoreline held up for the Hawks as they registered their first win of the series.

Fresno Pacific wasted no time flexing the offense in game two, capitalizing on a pair of walks to start the season.

Valdez blasted a three-run homer and Aguilar made it back-to-back blasts to stake the 'Birds to a 4-0 lead.

Holy Names recovered a run in the first and threatened for more before the Sunbirds' starter Justin Fuson escaped further damage.

The Hawks tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within one heading into the 6th inning.

Holy Names threatened again in the bottom of the 6th after a pair of walks but Gino Helmuth induced a double-play to end the inning and preserve the lead.

Fresno Pacific widened the lead in the top of the 7th, loading the bases before Chris Clement's 2-run double pushed the difference to 6-3.

Before the next pitch, Holy Names threw the ball down the left field line on a failed pickoff attempt that brought home the other two runners and stretched the difference to 8-3 in favor of FPU.

Helmuth closed the door in the seventh and Fresno Pacific held onto the series victory.

The Sunbirds will prepare for the final series of the regular series when they travel to Irvine on April 28th and 29th to take on Concordia.
