Bats Quieted in Losses at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO-Missed opportunities that they had been converting into wins cost the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (21-19 overall, 15-10 PacWest) dropped both games of the make-up double-header to the Point Loma Sea Lions (30-12 overall, 18-8 PacWest) Monday at Carroll B. Land Stadium.

In a matchup of the top two pitching teams in the PacWest, the Sunbirds couldn't muster offense against the Sea Lions in a 10-0 game loss or a 5-0 game two defeat.

Garrett Cooper started strong with three scoreless innings, but Point Loma got its bats to catch fire after a solo homer in the fourth.

The Sea Lions added three more runs in the inning and then a single run in the fourth on another homer made it a five run game.

A two-run homer and a three-run double in the sixth put Point Loma in position to earn the run rule, which they closed out after the top of the seventh.

Justin Fuson went to the mound for FPU in game two to try to stymie the PLNU bats but a two-out, three-run homer drifted over the short porch in right center to give the Sea Lions a 3-0 lead.

Point Loma added insurance runs in the fourth and the sixth to widen the gap to 5-0.

FPU's offense was limited to just four hits on the day with Koutarou Matsumaru the lone Sunbird to earn a hit in each game.

The Sunbirds offense was hampered by four double plays, including three consecutive to start the day.

FPU earned 10 walks on the day and had another two batters hit by pitches but could not turn that it to sustained offense.

The Sunbirds will look to bounce back and clinch a spot in the PacWest tournament when they travel to Concordia on Friday and Saturday for the final four games of the regular season.
