LA JOLLA, Calif.- Josh Wong's comeback victory highlighted a resilient team performance from the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-4 overall) despite a 6-1 loss to the Boston College Eagles (6-4 overall) Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Wong bounced back after dropping a quick first set 6-1. He found his grove by applying pressure to his opponent's backhand, executing well-timed approach shots to win the second-set tiebreaker. In the 3
rd set tiebreak, Wong quickly built a 4-2 before dropping the next four points.
Â
But Wong emphatically responded to win six of the final seven points in the match, winning his pairing and securing a point for Fresno Pacific.
Â
Wong's match was the last one going as FPU fell behind early despite a strong start in doubles that fell just short. One break cost the Sunbirds on both of the losing courts to fall 6-4, but
Ben Cronau and
Sven Bangert delivered quality doubles play against a tough No. 1 pairing to edge out a 7-5 victory.
Â
Down 1-0, Cronau broke his opponent's serve early in the 2
nd set but had the tables turned and fell behind 5-4 in the second set. Cronau delivered his best tennis of the day, breaking serve twice and holding serve in between to clinch the second set 7-5. Ultimately, he fell 10-7 in the tiebreak.
Â
Bangert held an early lead on Court No. 5 but saw it slip away to fall behind. Bangert broke serve early in the second set and held on to a 6-4 win and forced the 3
rd set tiebreak. He also fell 10-7 in the tiebreak.
Â
Despite a pair of losses in their first two matches back from a three-week layoff, the Sunbirds knocked off the rust against a pair of extremely talented teams in preparation for their final match of the week when they match up with Hawai'i Pacific Thursday at noon in Azusa.
