Game Recap: Baseball |

Valdez's 6-Hit Day Not Enough for FPU at Azusa

AZUSA, Calif.- Despite a six-hit day for Andrew Valdez the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (11-15 overall, 5-6 PacWest) fell 6-3 and 7-3 to the PacWest leading Azusa Pacific Cougars (19-11 overall, 12-4 PacWest) to drop the series Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Baseball Complex.

Valdez roped three home runs on the day and a double, accounting for a 6-8 day with 3 RBI and four runs scored.

But Fresno Pacific couldn't grab the lead against the conference leaders as the hosts started fast in both games and capitalized on walks issued by the Sunbirds' pitching staff.

A sacrifice fly in the first and two-run homer in the third gave Azusa Pacific a 3-0 lead a third of the way through the day's first game.

Andrew Valdez dug into the lead with a solo homer in the fourth.

APU stretched its lead to 6-1 before Cole Yoshida's RBI double and a second solo homer of the game for Valdez made it 6-3.

The Cougars held on behind a scoreless ninth to take the first game of the day.

APU didn't wait long to jump in front of game two, scoring twice in the first, once in the second, and four times in the third to build a 7-0 advantage over Fresno Pacific.

Valdez ripped his third homer of the day, another solo homer, to leadoff the top of the fourth and get FPU on the board.

Valdez triggered a two run inning for the 'Birds in the 5th, doubling to right center before Chris Clement's RBI single and Miguel Ortiz's RBI groundout brought FPU within four.

The Sunbirds' centerfielder single-handedly had as many hits as the Cougars in game two, racking up four hits to give him six on the day.

But the free passes and key hits for Azusa proved to be enough of a difference early for the Cougars to grab the sweep.

Fresno Pacific returns to the FPU Diamond on Friday, March 31st to begin a four-game series against Hawai'i Pacific at 2:00 p.m.

Following his inauguration ceremony, FPU President Dr. Andre Stephens will throw out the first pitch at 1:45 p.m.
