FRESNO, Calif.-Joleen Corona scored 10 of her team high 14 points in the second quarter as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (9-12 overall, 4-10 PacWest) ran away from the Chaminade Silverswords (1-22 overall, 1-16 PacWest) 82-43 Saturday afternoon at the Special Events Center.
"We definitely had stints defensively that kept us in the game during that first quarter," Fresno Pacific head coach
Tim Beauregard said after the game. "Connectivity on defense has to carry with us from game-to-game."
Corona's 10 point quarter helped Fresno Pacific outscored Chaminade by 14 in the period and the 'Birds never looked back.
Jenna Kurz and
Julie Ramirez also came off the bench to score in double-figures joining Corona as the only three 'Birds with 10 or more points.
"With Lydia, we thought our four best players tonight came off the bench," Beauregard said. "We're constructed where we don't need any 30-point scorers. We just need people to come in and be additive."
FPU got scoring contributions from 12 different players and had assists on 17 of its 29 field goals as the Sunbirds have continued to copy the strength in numbers formula that has netted them wins in five of their last six games.
The bench combined for 58 points and FPU scored 42 of its points in the paint while holding a plus-9 margin on the glass as they asserted themselves throughout the game.
"We're really confident with our ability to play inside-outside basketball," Beauregard said. "We knew we could continue to attack that."
Fresno Pacific will have a tough test against Concordia-Irvine as it concludes a six-game homestand on Monday night at 5:00 p.m. in the Special Events Center.
