Brown's 2-Run Single Rewards Bullpen, Earns Series Victory

FRESNO, Calif.-Nolan Brown's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth rewarded a stellar display of bullpen dominance and lifted the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (3-1 overall) to a 5-3 win and series victory over the Western Oregon Wolves (1-3 Overall) Saturday afternoon at FPU Diamond.

After taking the first two games of the series, FPU duplicated its late heroics from Thursday night to earn the series victory.

The Sunbirds knew their bullpen would play a key role on Saturday but it was pressed into action in just the third inning after Western Oregon struck for three runs in the third and had the bases loaded against starter Jaylen Rodriguez, who had already pitched in relief in the series.

Riley Creech came on for 2.2 innings of valuable relief, keeping the Western Oregon Wolves within reach.

Fresno Pacific struggled against the Wolves' starter Dylan Chalmers for the first five innings and saw ten straight retired before a walk to Jordan Smith started the bottom of the sixth.

Koutarou Matsumaru was hit by a pitch and then Chris Clement's sacrifice bunt was thrown up the left field line, scoring both runners.

But the Wolves' bullpen stymied the FPU threat and held the lead until the eighth.

Andrew Valdez was hit by a pitch and stole second. Tommy Rover walked and pinch-hitter Shane Pursell was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Thursday night's hero Cole Yoshida came up with the bases loaded and appeared to leg out an infield single to tie the game. The call was overturned to an out at first, but Yoshida's RBI tied the game at 3.

Nolan Brown entered and delivered a rope that brought home both runners and proved to be the difference.

Brady Crow, who worked two-innings for a win on Thursday, had already come on in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth to seal the win.

Fresno Pacific earns three wins over a team ranked two spots higher in the NCBWA preseason rankings and builds momentum before a long road trip that will take them into conference play.

The 'Birds open a series against Chico State on February 10th at Nettleton Stadium in Chico. The game will kick off an 11 game road trip against four different opponents before they host Holy Names for a four-game series on March 3rd at the FPU Diamond.
