ROHNERT PARK, Calif.-Late rallies sunk the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (5-6 overall) in both losses, 2-1 and 3-2, to the Sonoma State Seawolves (5-2 overall) Saturday at the Seawolf Diamond.
Garrett Cooper and
Gino Helmuth combined for eight scoreless innings in game one with
Peyton McNair's 2
nd inning single giving Fresno Pacific a 1-0 lead into the ninth.
But a fly ball that found grass turned into a two-run 9
th inning for the hosts that upended Fresno Pacific's first chance at a series victory.
Cameron Gallardo gave Fresno Pacific a solid start in game two, only surrendering a run in the final inning of his five.
With Sonoma State up 1-0, Fresno Pacific rallied in the top of the 7
th. With two on,
Andrew Valdez singled home the tying run before
Tommy Rover's sacrifice fly gave Fresno Pacific the lead.
But in the bottom of the 7
th, Sonoma State loaded the bases with two outs. An error scored both the tying and winning runs for the Seawolves to conclude the series in heartbreaking fashion.
The Sunbirds will attempt to shake off the end of conference play as they wrap up the road trip with a four-game series against defending PacWest champion Point Loma to open conference play next weekend.
