HONOLULU, Hawai'i.-Rachel Berry delivered a monster night as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (11-13 overall, 6-11 PacWest) regained their balance in a 72-64 road win over the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks (13-10 overall, 11-5 PacWest) Monday night at The Shark Tank.
Berry filled the stat sheet with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists leading a balanced attack the rest of the way to complete the season sweep of HPU with a much needed road win.
"This was a really good bounce back effort for us," Fresno Pacific head coach
Tim Beauregard said. "We challenged our team to compete at a higher level tonight and it was evident that from the opening tip that they were going to meet that challenge. We had a next play mentality that carried us through a few Hawai'i Pacific runs."
Fresno Pacific quickly jumped out behind
Bre Hurt's baseline jumper. FPU built a lead with aggressiveness by crashing the offensive glass and getting to the free-throw line.
Berry delivered 9 points in the first half and snagged four rebounds while
Jenna Kurz delivered 8 points off the bench.
The Sunbirds held a slight edge in almost every statistical category but they dominated the glass in the first half.
Fresno Pacific grabbed 10 more rebounds over the first twenty minutes than the hosts.
But Hawai'i Pacific clawed back by hitting down a trio of threes and kept the second quarter even, holding Fresno Pacific's lead to just two points at 33-31 into halftime.
The Sharks quickly took the lead in the second half but Fresno Pacific closed the third quarter on a 10-2 run to keep a 49-45 lead at the start of the fourth.
FPU's lead was trimmed to 54-52 before
Aaliyah Seuell knocked down a corner three on a dime from
Felicia Dourva, forcing an HPU timeout.
Berry continued to widen the Sunbirds lead with Hurt and
Julie Ramirez helping the Sunbirds grab a game-high 12 point lead just under four minutes left in the game.
The Sharks cut that in half with 1:41 remaining.
Berry added key free throw to buoy the lead back to eight points and break her season-high of 19 points that she set a week earlier against Concordia.
Berry, along with
Lydia Manu, helped seal the game at the line in the final minute.
"A close game in the second half always comes down toa few key plays," Beauregard said of the finish. "Tonight, it was the jolt of offense that Aaliyah gave us when we needed it most. We are excited about her development and tonight she was asked to come in for the first time at the start of the 4
th quarter. She was ready and immediately hit two shots that gave us all the momentum we needed."
Fresno Pacific received big contributions up and down the roster with fellow starters Dourva and Hurt combining for 17 points.
Maesyn Rix grabbed 8 rebounds to lead FPU's dominance on the glass.
Jenna Kurz had 9 of Fresno Pacific's 29 bench points.
Berry finished with a game-high 21 points, the 2
nd highest scoring output of her career next to her 27 point game last year against Sonoma State.
"It was an incredible
Rachel Berry performance," Beauregard said of his senior guard. "that was aided by solid contributions from multiple people. Rachel was relentless in her desire to win all night. She was just everywhere, doing everything, all night."
Berry's solid night included a 9-11 game at the free-throw line, leading FPU to 80% at the stripe.
"We're excited to finish the Hawai'i trip with what we hope can be another focused effort from our lionesses on Wednesday," Beauregard concluded.
The Sunbirds close the Hawai'i trip Wednesday night when they play Chaminade in Honolulu at 8:30 p.m. (PST).
