HONOLULU, Hawai'i-Three-point shooting kickstarted the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (12-13 overall, 7-11 PacWest) offense and depth carried it through a 71-37 victory over the Chaminade Silverswords (1-25 overall, 1-19 PacWest) Wednesday night at McCabe Gymnasium.
The Sunbirds connected on 5 of their first 8 three-pointers and received points from all thirteen players that touched the court as they displayed the depth has powered them at their best.
"Tonight was a full team effort," Fresno Pacific head coach
Tim Beauregard said. "Everybody was additive. Its fun watching our seniors empty the gas tank for their love of their teammates and for their love of the game."
Sara Lundqvist knocked down a three on the opening possession but Chaminade stormed back with a pair of three's to grab the early lead on Fresno Pacific.
The Sunbirds answered with a 10-0 run that included six points from
Felicia Dourva and three offensive rebounds to take a 13-6 lead at the first media timeout.
The run would extend to 17-0 with
Jenna Kurz,
Anisa Rillo and
Joleen Corona all contributing buckets before Chaminade scored another bucket.
Rillo, who buried a three-pointer in the run, added one more three-ball to extend the Sunbirds lead to 23-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The offense scuffled to start the second quarter, going 0-7 from the field and receiving just two points at the free-throw line, as Chaminade outscored FPU 6-2 over three and a half minutes.
The Sunbirds maintained a 25-14 lead until Chaminade hit another three.
Bre Hurt ended the drought from the field with a jumper and Fresno Pacific reset its lead to double-figures on the next trip down.
Chaminade kept the difference at ten momentarily but
Rachel Berry drained a three from the top of the key and then cruised down the lane for a layup as time expire in the first half to give Fresno Pacific a 39-23 lead at the break.
Both offenses were a bit sluggish to start the third quarter but Fresno Pacific widened its lead to 20 over the first five minutes of the second half.
The Fresno Pacific defense was close to its best at the end of the period by causing four turnovers in the period and extending the lead to 57-33 at the end of the third.
Olivia Garcia knocked down a three at the start of the fourth quarter giving every one of the thirteen Sunbirds at least one point.
Hurt was the lone Sunbird to reach double-figures with 10, highlighting another night for Fresno Pacific with contributions from everyone.
Dourva, Berry, and
Aaliyah Seuell added 8 points apiece.
Maesyn Rix snagged 9 rebounds for Fresno Pacific to lead a dominant effort on the glass in which it outrebounded Chaminade 51-35, including 22 offensive rebounds.
The Sunbirds also committed a season-low 5 turnovers which helped set the defense throughout the night and keep Chaminade to its second-lowest scoring output of the year.
"The Hawai'i trip is always tough," Beauregard said. "To finish with such a great effort on the last day of the trip is a testament to our teams focus and desire to finish the trip with a winning record. We are excited to get back to our families, take a couple of days off, and get focused for what we know can be a continued positive finish to our season."
