FRESNO, Calif.-Despite scoring the first goal of the game, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-6 overall) couldn't sustain their offense in a 14-5 loss to the Santa Clara Broncos (2-4 overall) Saturday afternoon at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center.
Hannah Walker scored on a powerplay less than two minutes into the game but offensive effectiveness and converting power plays would be problematic for Fresno Pacific the rest of the way.
Santa Clara answered with three straight goals before
Sam Dieterle tallied the second Fresno Pacific goal, but the Sunbirds would never lead again in the game.
The Broncos added a goal for a 4-2 lead at the end of one quarter.
Rosemary Chapman scored on FPU's second powerplay of the game which made it 5-3.
Alli Hepner scored the only other Fresno Pacific goal in the second as the Sunbirds faced a 7-4 deficit at halftime.
It was the 2
nd half that proved costly as FPU failed to convert on any more of its powerplays, going 0-7 after Santa Clara's exclusions that followed Chapman's goal.
Santa Clara shot over 50% for the game while the powerplays weren't the Sunbirds only struggle.
Fresno Pacific scored on just 5 of 27 shots for the game, finishing at just 18%.
Walker added a second goal for FPU in the closing seconds of the third quarter, but that would be the extent of FPU's scoring as the Santa Clara defense tightened up.
Fresno Pacific will turn its attention to the Fresno State Tournament next weekend as they will take on APU at 4 p.m. on Friday.
