FRESNO, Calif. – It was a complete team effort for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds as they took down the Concordia University Golden Eagles 3-1 Wednesday at the Special Events Center.
Early in the first set, the match was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading point for point.
The points were highlighted by a block from
Geneva Elliott, as well as kills from Ogas,
Claire Corippo, and
Madison Girnius.
With their largest lead of the set so far at two at 19-17, the Sunbirds won the next four points off a trio of errors on the Golden Eagles and a service ace from
McKenna Hughes to take the lead 23-18.
The Golden Eagles won six straight points to tie the set 24-24.
The Sunbirds countered quickly winning two straight points off a kill from Girnius and a service ace from
Catie Speas to take the first 26-24.
Much like the first, the second set was back-and-forth early with both teams trading points.
Tied at 5-5, CUI won five of the next six points to take their largest lead so far of the set at 10-6.
After winning more than half the remaining points in the second set, the Golden Eagles took the set 25-15.
The Sunbird opened the third set with four straight points to take an early lead with a pair of service aces from
Cambria Waites, an error on CUI, and a kill from Ogas.
With the score 7-3, the 'Birds won eight out of nine of the points to take their largest lead of the set 15-4.
The points came from a pair of service aces each for Speas and
Mia Gilcrest as well errors on the Golden Eagles and a pair of kills from Corippo.
At 20-9, CUI went on a run of five straight points to bring themselves back within six.
The two teams continued to trade points with the Golden Eagles narrowing the Sunbird lead.
A kill from Acosta and a solo block for Corippo capitalized the end of the set as the 'Birds took the third 25-20.
The Sunbirds continued the momentum from the third into the fourth taking the early lead.
The teams traded points late into the set with Fresno Pacific continuing to maintain their lead.
At 20-18, the 'Birds won six of the next eight points to take the fourth 25-21 and the match 3-1.
It was a total team effort as seven Sunbirds scored one kill or more with Gilcrest, Ogas, and Acosta in double digits.
The Sunbirds also recorded a season high ten services aces with Speas and Gilcrest leading the way with three each.
Fresno Pacific will host the Biola Eagles this Saturday at 2pm in the Special Events for their last home match of the season.
