O'FALLON, Ill. – The end of the season was marked with a dominant win for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds over the Mercyhurst Lancers 18-10 in the WWPA Tournament.
The Sunbirds started the match off hot offensively scoring three straight goals from
Blake Johnson,
Forrest Gray, and
William Green to take an early 3-0 lead.
The first goal of the game for the Lakers came off a converted penalty shot, but the Sunbirds on the next possession converted again with a goal from
Samuel Ramos to keep their three-goal lead as the first period ended.
The offensive domination continued for the 'Birds into the second period as added two more goals to the score sheet from
Christian Clark and
Andrew Duncan.
Mercyhurst was awarded another penalty shot which they converted bringing the score to 6-2.
Scott Tashima added his name to the stat sheet with his first goal of the game followed by another goal from Green giving the Sunbirds their largest lead of the match up six.
The Lancers would score their first non-penalty goal shot of the game, but the Sunbirds responded quickly with three goals of their own from
Pietro Cattano, and a pair from Gray to go up 11-3 to end the second period.
On their first two possession of the third quarter, the Lancers converted to bring themselves back within six.
Eugenio Maldonado would score his first two goals of the game, making him the ninth Sunbird to score a goal so far in this match.
Both teams would trade goals as the third quarter came to an end with the Sunbirds up seven.
The beginning of the fourth period quickly became a defensive battle with teams goalies making saves.
The Sunbirds outscored the Lancers four goals to three to end the fourth period giving the Sunbirds the match 18-10.
Green scored the last goal for the Sunbirds putting an exclamation point on the end of a historic career for the senior.
Other Sunbird senior
Ethan McLaughlin ended the day with seven saves and two steals and was named to the WWPA 2nd All Tournament Team.
The win was a total team effort with over nine Sunbirds scoring a goal.
The Sunbirds end the season with a 6
th place finish in the WWPA Championship and a 5-23 overall record.
