FRESNO, Calif. – A last second Sunbird goal for senior
Ashley Gardner created a poetic ending to the season for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds as they fell to the Point Loma Sea Lions 5-1 on Saturday evening at Ramirez Field on Senior Day.
The Sea Lions came out aggressive early recording four shots in the first four minutes keeping Fresno Pacific on their heels.
In the 8
th minute, a deflected shot turned into a follow up goal for the Sea Lions to put them up early 1-0.
Point Loma scored again quickly in the 15
th minute to go up 2-0.
For the remainder of the half, the Sunbirds Brigitta Eggertsdottir recorded multiple saves to keep the 'Birds within two heading into the half.
The first chance in the second half for the Sunbirds came from
Cadence Cunha off the kickoff, but it was saved by the Sea Lion goalkeeper.
Three straight goals for the Sea Lions came in 52
nd, 64
th and 70
th minute to give them a large five goal lead.
The teams continued to trade possessions until the last minute of the match.
Off a free kick with less than two seconds left, senior Maiya Ann Serrao sent the ball into the box where fellow senior
Ashley Gardner headed it in for the goal.
The goal marked a poetic ending the Sunbirds season on an emotional Senior Day as they fell 5-1 to the PacWest Champion Sea Lions.
