ROHNERT PARK, Calif.-A slow shooting night for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-1 overall) turned into an 86-52 loss to the Chico State Wildcats (1-1 overall) Saturday night at the Wolves' Den on the campus of Sonoma State.
"There won't be any flinch in our locker room," head coach
Tim Beauregard said. "Early season basketball can swing one way or the other. It is a great teacher."
Maesyn Rix's second double-double in as many games this season wasn't enough for Fresno Pacific to overcome an 0-11 start from three in the first half.
Despite being outscored 23-11 in the first quarter, the Sunbirds responded in the second with their best shooting of the night, knocking down four three's in the quarter and making it a four point game at the half, trailing 33-29.
Chico State pulled away behind a monster third quarter in which they shot 68% and outscored the Sunbirds by 19 in the period.
Fresno Pacific had its coldest quarter in the fourth, going just 2-17 from the field as the score went final.
Still, Rix poured in 12 points and snagged 11 rebounds to go with two steals.
Fellow starters
Felicia Dourva and
Jasmine Heu combined for another 17 points and
Julie Ramirez added seven.
"We will attack the challenge of this next week," Beauregard added. "And chase a better version of ourselves next weekend. Ultimately, our defense was not as connected as it needed to be tonight. It's not who we want to be or who we've shown we can be."Â
Five different Sunbirds scored points off the bench.
"We will attack the challenge of this next week," Beauregard concluded. "and chase a better version of ourselves next weekend. We will stay confident and continue to focus on winning each chance to get better. Our team cares about the right things daily so I'm excited to grow with them from this weekend."
Fresno Pacific will be back in action next weekend when it travels to Seaside, California for two more games against CCAA opponents beginning on Friday at 2 p.m. against Monterey Bay.
