RIVERSIDE, Calif.- The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (3-12 overall) dropped their first two games in the Lancer Joust Tournament to the #15 California Baptist University Lancers (10-12 overall) and the University of Redlands Bulldogs (11-5 overall) Friday at the Lancer Aquatic Center.
The Sunbirds and the Lancers traded a pair of goals on their first possessions, with
Scott Tashima finding the back of the net for the 'Birds.
CBU scored on back-back possessions to take an early 3-1 before the Sunbirds answered on a goal from
Christian Clark off the assist from
William Hoyle.
The Lancers scored four unanswered goals to close the 1
st period and take a commanding lead 7-2.
Fresno Pacific opened the 2
nd scoring back-back goals from
William Green and
Eugenio Maldonado to cut the Lancer lead to three.
CBU countered back quickly scoring four unanswered goals to close the 2
nd period and take their largest lead of the game 11-4.
The 3
rd period opened with three more goals for the Lancers.
The Sunbirds lone goal in the 3rd came from
Pietro Cattano.
CBU scored three more unanswered to maintain the lead 17-5 heading into the 4
th.
The Lancers tallied six more goals before
Cameron Reynolds finally broke through for the Sunbirds ending the scoring drought.
The 4
th period ended with another goal from CBU and a last second goal from FPU's
Andrew Duncan to end the game 24-7.
Seven different Sunbirds combined for all seven goals.
The Sunbirds offensive struggles continued into the second game of the day against the University of Redlands.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead scoring four unanswered.
On back-to-back possessions the Sunbirds were finally able to convert off as
Nikita Kravstov added two goals to end the 1
st period 6-2.
The Sunbirds scored the first points of the 2
nd period for both teams with a goal from Reynolds to bring the 'Birds back within three.
Redlands scored two more before the 'Birds Cattano broke through to score his second goal of the day.
The 3
rd period started quickly with two more goals from the Redlands to take their largest lead of the match 11-4.
Another pair of back-to-back goals from Maldonado and Gray broke the Bulldogs scoring run bringing the 'Birds back within five.
The Bulldogs would end the 3
rd with two more goals taking a 13-6 lead into the 4
th period.
The Sunbirds offensive struggles continued as the Bulldogs convert multiple Sunbird turnovers into four goals.
The lone goals in the 4
th period came from Gray and Maldonado, for both of their second goals of the game.
Time expired and the Sunbirds fell 18-8.
Fresno Pacific will head to La Mirada to face LMU and Santa Clara tomorrow at 12:30 and 2:45pm for their final games of the Lancer Joust Tournament.
