Sunbirds Home Win Streak Snapped By Sharks

FRESNO, Calif- A three game win streak for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (7-7 overall, 4-2 conference) was snapped Thursday night by the Hawaii Pacific University Sharks (1-10 overall, 1-6 conference) at the Special Events Center. 

The Sunbirds started out the first set strong winning six of the first ten points to take the early lead 6-4. 

Fresno Pacific continued their runs with the help of errors on the Sharks, kills from Claire Corippo and Makena Ogas, and a service ace by Catie Speas to take their biggest lead of the set so far at 20-12. 

The Sharks continued to hang with the Sunbirds, but never came closer than within five points as the 'Birds took the first set 25-18 ending with a kill from Mia Gilcrest.

In the second, the Sharks took an early 6-0 lead off a pair of kills and multiple errors by the Sunbirds.

Fresno Pacific struggled to find themselves back in the set only coming within five points as the Sharks took the second set easily 25-18.

The Sunbirds continued to struggle early into the third as the Sharks took another early lead. 

Another service ace from Speas and a kill from Amanda Lauer and Corippo brought the Sunbirds back to tie the score 6-6. 

The tie was as close as the 'Birds would get as the Sharks went on a series of runs to take the third 25-17.

The fourth set proved the most tightly contested with four tie scores and two lead changes. 

The Sharks and the Sunbirds traded points early in the set.

With the score tied 9-9, Fresno Pacific won seven of the next 10 points to secure their largest of the set thus far at six. 

At 20-16, a a series of errors by the Sunbirds and a pair of kills and services aces allowed the Sharks back in to tie the score 21-21. 

The Sharks proceeded to win four of the next five points to take the set 25-22 and the victory 3-1.

Seven Sunbirds registered one kill or more with Ogas leading the way with nine.  

Fresno Pacific will continue it's conference homestand this Saturday at 3pm against the Chaminade Silverswords (15-2 overall, 4-2 conference) at the Special Events Center.
