Cunha Scores Again as FPU Falls to APU

AZUSA, Calif.-Four second half goals by the hosts ruined the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-11-1 overall, 1-5-1 PacWest) final match of the road trip in a 5-1 loss to the Azusa Pacific Cougars (6-4-4 overall, 3-1-2 PacWest) Monday night at the Cougar Athletic Stadium.

After a scoreless first thirty minutes, Azusa broke through with a shot from outside of the box to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, moments after Briggita Eggertsdottir made an incredible save on a terrific cross and volley by APU, the Cougars recovered possession at midfield and countered with a long shot that skipped into goal to double the scoreline to 2-0.

APU added a third despite a pair more of impressive saves by Eggertsdottir, extending the difference to 3-0 in the 63rd minute.

Fresno Pacific got on the board capitalizing on a turnover after a goal kick. Mariah Contreras squared the ball where Mackenzie Madron tapped it on to Cadence Cunha on the left side of the goal and the freshman tallied her third goal in the past three games.

Azusa Pacific added two more goals over the final ten minutes to secure the scoreline.

Eggertsdottir finished the match with six saves for FPU.

Fresno Pacific gets a reprieve from the road, returning to Fresno to battle Biola Saturday evening at 7:30pm on Ramirez Field.
