RIVERSIDE, Calif.-A four overtime, sudden death victory tapped the reserves of the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-4 overall) as they edged the University of Redlands 14-13 before falling 20-2 to the UC Irvine Anteaters Saturday.
Rosemary Chapman scored virtually every time the Sunbirds were in need of a goal, including the game-winner in Sudden Death to seal the win.
The Sunbirds trailed 3-0 early before Chapman netted the first goal for the Sunbirds.
Redlands held a slim 6-4 lead at the half, but the Sunbirds' defense tightened up from there and prevented their opponents from running away.
Chapman scored a second goal to spark the second half scoring for FPU but by the time
Maddie Murad scored to make it 7-6, Redlands added two more goals to widen the difference.
Emma Cook and
Sam Dieterle answered with a goal a piece but Redlands scored just before the end of the third quarter to make it 10-8.
Chapman added two more goals at the start of the fourth that were quickly answered by Redlands answered those to take a 12-10 lead.
FPU strung together its best run with three consecutive goals from
Emily Lopez-Ibarra,
Bella Alcazar and
Emma Cook to take its first lead of the game.
Redlands scored what would be the last goal for a while, with a minute and eighteen seconds remaining, eventually forcing overtime.
The game remained tied at 13 through three overtime periods before Chapman netted the winner with just 1:14 left.
The Sunbirds spent all their energy in the first match of the day, wrapping up the five game tournament with a 20-2 loss to UC Irvine.
Emma Cook netted both goals for Fresno Pacific, one in each half, as the Anteaters' rest proved invaluable against an exhausted group of Sunbirds.
The Sunbirds will have a week to rest before heading down to Southern California for a pair of games against Occidental and Claremont McKenna.
