FRESNO, Calif.-Despite a 16-0 run, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (7-12 overall, 2-10 PacWest) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end after a 57-44 loss to the Point Loma Sea Lions (11-12 overall, 9-6 PacWest) Saturday at the Special Events Center.
"We didn't do a great job on the boards," Fresno Pacific head coach
Tim Beauregard said. "We had 24 missed shots in the first half, and we had zero offensive rebounds. We can usually win those battles and that told us that we didn't have the desire tonight."
Neither team shot the ball well in the first quarter with both offenses holding field goal percentages under 30%.
The game separated in the second quarter when Point Loma hit eight of its 12 shots, including three 3's while Fresno Pacific was just 2-12 without a three-pointer.
Fresno Pacific was outscored 22-7 in that period, putting them in a 32-15 deficit at the break.
But Sunbirds rallied with a 16-0 run in the third quarter and made its first two threes of the game. The Sunbirds also had their best stretch of the game on the glass narrowing the margin all the way down to four.
But Point Loma went back to the arc in the fourth and found enough offense to create separation and fend off the Sunbirds.
Fresno Pacific didn't have a player in double-figures scoring but received 22 points from the bench and received scoring contributions from 13 of the 14 players that hit the floor with ten players making at least one field goal.
"Now, we will lean into the maturity of our team," Beauregard said. "We have a few days to prepare for a really tough team that will stretch us in ways the other teams we've played haven't."
Fresno Pacific continues the homestand on Tuesday when Hawai'i Pacific visits the Special Events Center at 5 p.m.
