FRESNO, Calif.-A 25-4 at the end of the first half cost the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (5-14 overall, 2-10 PacWest) in an 83-48 loss to the PacWest leading Point Loma Sea Lions (20-3 overall, 15-0 PacWest) Saturday night at the Special Events Center.
"We were really good in the half court in the first half," Fresno Pacific head coach
C.J. Haydock said after the game. "And then they really disrupted us with their defense. That started to seep in where we took some panicked shots. That's what allowed the separation. I thought we were really good in the half court on defense, just a really rough night on offense."
Marten Maide knocked down three 3's and led the Sunbirds with 16 points but Point Loma knocked down 13 3's to pull away.
The early section of the game was fairly close despite Fresno Pacific struggling from the field. Still, the Sunbirds pulled within four at 16-12 before Point Loma unleashed its biggest run of the game and cruised to a
41-16 lead at the half.
The pace opened in the second half with both teams scoring consistently.
Kyle Monk,
Isaac Peralta and
Ryas Vang all helped Fresno Pacific shoot 53% in the second half, but the game was out of reach.
"We know who those guys are, "Haydock said. "When you see it first hand against a National Title contender, you see what it looks like. Competing and going toe-to-toe is the growth point for us tonight."
Fresno Pacific will continue its homestand when Hawai'i Pacific visits the Special Events Center Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Halftime of that game will feature a ring ceremony for the FPU Track and Field 4x400 Relay Team that Won the National Championship in 2022.
