FRESNO, Calif.-The newness of the conference opener and the home opener rolled into an exciting opener firing up the home crowd as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-3 overall, 1-0 PacWest) rolled the energy into a commanding 3-0 sweep of the Holy Names Hawks (5-4 overall, 0-1 PacWest) Thursday night in the Special Events Center.
Despite their opponent's impressive start to the non-conference, Fresno Pacific looked every bit the aggressor from the start of the match.
Corinne Acosta looked like the familiar face that has wowed Sunbird fans over the past four seasons and sparked the FPU offense in the first set.
Acosta was ultra-efficient from the start tallying five kills as Fresno Pacific gripped the lead early in the first set. FPU hit .191 in the first set, but it was three service aces and a strong run from
Katelyn Kirkman that solidified the Sunbirds' lead.
While Holy Names inched closer towards the end of the set,
Cambria Waites sealed the set with a powerful cross-court kill locking in the 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win.
FPU again established the lead in the second with a 10-5 lead early on. Acosta and
Madison Girnius helped spark the attack for FPU. The Sunbirds maintained the lead in the 5-point range until it was 22-16 when Holy Names marched back in with 9 straight points to flip the score and the lead at 23-22.
Makenna Ogas delivered a pair of kills sandwiched around an HNU error to secure the 26-24 set win and put FPU up 2-0 in the match.
Acosta continued her powerful offensive performance in the third, finishing with 12 kills and an attack percentage of .300 as Fresno Pacific overcame a pair of three-point deficits before racing out behind Ogas' service.
The Sunbirds supported the four-point lead throughout the match, wrapping up the sweep with a 25-21 victory.
Girnius finished with 6 kills and 3 blocks while
Chloe Melis was apart of 5 blocks including 3 solo.
FPU's biggest statistical advantage came at the service line as Kirkman, Ogas, and
Catie Speas each delivered a pair of aces and
Anastassiya Barakhoyeva added one. Meanwhile, Holy Names committed nine service errors.
Fresno Pacific continues with the teams currently atop the PacWest Standings, hosting the Biola Eagles Saturday at 1:00pm in the Special Events Center.
