Fresno Pacific Foils Biola in Four

1st Win over Biola in PacWest Era

FRESNO, Calif.-One of the principal words Fresno Pacific Volleyball head coach Mike MacNeill has used since taking over the Sunbirds has been "fun". Fresno Pacific (3-3 overall, 2-0 PacWest) had a ton of fun in front of an electric crowd as they knocked off the Biola Eagles (4-5 overall, 1-1 PacWest) in four back-and-forth sets Saturday afternoon.

FPU won the final three sets, all in comeback fashion, to capture their first win against BU in the PacWest era and snapping an 8-match losing streak to the Eagles.

However, the historic win started off auspiciously as Biola looked every as capable as they team picked to finish third in the conference.

Biola hit .269 in the opening set and minimized FPU' offense (which hit .000 in the 1st) and rode behind Anna Aubele, seemingly at will on their way to a 25-18 victory in set one.

The Sunbirds responded immediately in the second set with a 5-2 lead. The teams jockeyed for position across the early part of the 2nd set before Chloe Melis delivered a big kill and McKenna Hughes backed it up with a service ace to stake FPU to a 15-11 lead.

Fresno Pacific relinquished the lead at 20-20, after three straight points from Biola, but Makena Ogas earned the side out with a monstrous cross-court kill.

FPU built a 23-20 lead behind the service of Aydalis Felix, but Biola marched right back to tie the set at 23.

Freshman Cambria Waites delivered in a key moment to earn set-point, but Biola prolonged the set with a kill in the middle.

The Sunbirds turned to Corinne Acosta and Kaiessa Sounart to grab the set 26-24 and tie the match at 1-1. The frantic ending engaged a vocal home crowd that was jubilant with the final point of the set.

Ultimately, the difference was the Sunbirds 12 kills to just 1 error in the set which kept the vocal supporters engaged throughout the set.

The happy crowd kept it rolling in set three as Fresno Pacific kept the early edge. However, Biola flipped a three-point FPU lead into a two-point deficit at 11-9 behind setter Abby Brewster's service run.

The deficit finally grew to 21-16 in favor of Biola before Acosta delivered a huge kill to earn side out. Biola committed three-straight attack errors against the aggressive serve of Catie Speas and FPU pulled within one.

Ogas' service run put FPU ahead 23-22 but Biola delivered two straight points to earn set-point.

The first was staved off by Acosta's key kill but Biola forced another set-point at 25-24.

A service error opened the door for Acosta again and then an attack error by Biola gave FPU the 27-25 win.

The momentum was short-lived despite FPU having the 2 sets to 1 lead, as Biola took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set.

Acosta's service run in the fourth helped FPU score five straight points and take a 9-6 lead. Biola quickly tied it, before FPU jumped back in front 12-9. Biola tied it again at 12 before the Sunbirds inched away again at 14-12.

The set continued to go back and forth until Melis punctuated a run by tooling the aggressive Biola block, to set the Sunbirds in front 19-15.

FPU would maintain the lead and create match-point at 24-21 on a kill by Waites. Biola staved off the first two, before an attack error sealed the impressive win for Fresno Pacific at 25-23.

The win is Fresno Pacific's first over Biola since 2011, when both were members of the Golden State Athletic Conference in the NAIA.

FPU had won 24 of the previous 25 meetings before that.

Fresno Pacific has plenty of momentum heading into their Hawai'i trip next week. The Sunbirds have won three straight matches and 9 of their last 10 sets.

The Sunbirds will open up their island tour at Hawai'i Hilo on Wednesday night at 10 p.m. (PST) before heading to Honolulu for a matchup with Hawai'i Pacific at 10 p.m. (PST) Friday. They conclude the trip on Saturday, September 17th with a 6 p.m. (PST) matchup against Chaminade.
